"Just before that, I had been informed that I had received a teacher assistantship at the University of Hawaii," Rep. Neil Abercrombie told the House Floor.
"I was in elementary school at Koko Head Elementary in Honolulu and was given the honor to pin the 50th star on our school flag at a special school assembly," said Rep. Mazie Hirono testified.
Both relived the moment when Hawaii became a state, during debate over a resolution honoring the islands.
The US House gave unanimous approval to a resolution recognizing and celebrating the 50th anniversary of the entry of Hawaii into the union. The actual anniversary date is August 21st. However, Congress will not be in session, so the resolution was passed Monday.
