Hawaii Veterans for Obama Event
Today I attended the Hawaii Veterans for Obama luncheon at Dole Cannery. The event featured myself along with Hawaii's full Congressional Delegation, Senator Inouye, Senator Akaka and Representative Abercrombie. The room was full of veterans from numerous wars, with over 260 people in attendance.
Senator Akaka got the event off to a good start with a song, and then the program began. We all spoke of the debt we owe to our vets for their service to this country and in particular our Filipino Veterans. It was clear that we must recognize them formally with the Filipino Veteran's Equity Act. And we must get all veterans the support and services they deserve.
One name was repeatedly mentioned - Senator Barack Obama. Our Congressional Delegation agreed - the Obama-Biden administration will be committed to creating a 21st Century Department of Veterans Affairs. Obama has made the commitment to rebuild the VA's broken benefits system, improve mental health services, and address veterans falling into homelessness. Senator Inouye stated "...we are not the policeman of the world. Senator Obama did the right thing and voted against this war and a President Obama will do the right thing and end this war. But first we must do the right thing and get him elected."
