Bringing Hawaiian Grinds to the White House Lawn
On June 25th history was made again in DC with the first ever Hawaiian style luau on the White House lawn. This annual White House picnic for members of Congress and their families was transformed with contemporary Hawaiian cuisine, dance and music. My husband Leighton and I were in attendance with the other 2,200 guests. I had to come straight from voting so I was wearing my work attire, but I can tell you I did see some very interesting versions of what people think is aloha attire. It was a special night, torches on the lawn, lanterns and paper leis contrasting with Washington Monument and the DC skyline. I spoke with Chef Alan Wong who was cooking for four days with his staff in the White House. It was a great evening and a wonderful opportunity for my colleagues to experience a touch of what makes Hawaii special.
